Usually we can find swirl for classic art design. For feminine, elegant, or even grunge design. Im using inkscape for every design and so glad I found this spiro swirl tutorial using inkscape. Here is a comprehensive video tutorial, (created by syllie) that demonstrates how to use the awesome new spiro swirls feature in Inkscape 0.47, which was released in November 2009. One of the new additions to Inkscape is the possibility to use Spiro curves (Cornu spirals).

Inkscape Interface

The interface of Inkscape is user friendly specially for newbie. List of button at vertical left toolbar are quick easy navigation. Its symbol represent its function. There’s Shape Tools including square, 3D box, circle, star, swirl. This tools easy to use to create a shape. To scale or select we can use this Select Tools . Beside using Shape Tools, we also can use these calligraphy pen, path , and pencil to create freehand image . It’s so easy to adjust its size and position
List menu at top toolbar is simple so easy to navigate.Next we will learn by doing, creating an image using Inkscape.

What is Vector Graphic?

Inkscape is vector graphic editor. File extension of Inkscape file is SVG or Scalable Vector Graphic. What is a vector and why it is scalable? You may have no idea what it is, but you can see this illustration for an example. Vector image based on geometric while bitmap graphic based on pixel. Main benefit is, vector graphic is scalable without reducing its quality.

Compare to bitmap graphic, if you scale it to larger or smaller size, the result is annoying image because you scale pixel not image. You can expand or shrink from original size without losing any of thefidelity of the original image. If you still want to have a bitmap image when you’re done, it’s easy to convert an SVG image to a bitmap. This is called rasterization. Just export SVG image to .png or .jpg file. Although it is easy to go from vector to bitmap, it’s not easy to go from bitmap to vector.

Inkscape:Introduction

Most of us, more familiar with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, Corel Draw and another paid software. I’m not a master in design, even I have no basic in Computer Science nor Graphic Design. Drawing is just my hobby and I still learning day by day. Before using Inkscape, there’s the overview of Inkscape that can be our consideration to use it.

Inkscape is Free
Inkscape is released as an opensource. No need to spend your money. Many of the popular graphic editor package are too expensive, especially for non-profit user. I think you’ll consider to spend too much money for your hobby not your work art. At least, it means you can download it freely without worry about expired date.

Based on Vector Graphic
Main benefit is Inkscape is vector graphic editor. Different with raster/bitmap graphic based on grid of pixel values, Inkscape represents image as geometric construct. It’s easier to say that bitmap image will crash if resized, vector image can be resized as large as possible and it wont be crash.

User Friendly Layout
Based on my own experience, Inkscape layout is easy to use. Tools and menus are arranged neatly so it’s understandable and user friendly.

Simple Operation
If you play with raster image editor, you should use so many layers for different section in one image. Inkscape is easy editable. For example, if you draw a duck, you should draw its head, body, tail, feet apart. This part wont be merged till you group it. That’s why we don’t need too many layers.

Always being Developed
Inkscape is actively developed, so there will be an updated version. Latest version of Inkscape available at its official site
